Visiting Tangier

A few weeks ago when we stayed in Tarifa for a weekend, and spent a day visiting Tangier across the straight of Gibralter.

We took the ferry from Tarifa and within less than an hour we were there. We only had one day to explore the most charming places of Tangier so we decided to go with a guide. Normally I prefer to travel on my own, planning where the visit, restaurants and controlling the time to spend at each place but in this case it was certainly the best decision.

When we arrived at the port we were greeted by our guide who took us to see the countryside around Tangier.

The day was not too sunny and no one was in the water though the sea looked quite inviting for a swim.

We visited the old center, called the Medina, including the Kasbah (fortifications), markets and squares.

The colorful streets in blue, green and white and colored ceramic tiles add to the charm of Tangier.

For lunch we went to La Mamounia restaurant where we tried the menu which consisted of several traditional dishes.

When we finished the meal we had time to walk, go to a cafe and explore the town.

At the end of the trip, before returning to the port to catch our ferry, we went to see the local shops which sell products such as argan oil, cashmere foulards and pashminas and ceramics for home decoration.

It was a very packed day of sightseeing, shopping and eating, going all around Tangier, and leaving with the impression of having seen the most interesting parts. If you are in the region of Cadiz, this is a visit that we highly recommend.

ARCO Madrid 2015

This weekend visited the 34th edition of ARCOmadrid, the art fair organized by IFEMA.

The selected works range from historical avant-garde through contemporary classics to present day art.

The International Fair of Contemporary Art, which opened last Thursday by the Kings of Spain, was closed by the President of Colombia in support of the Colombian galleries participating as the highlighted guest country.

This year ARCO Madrid closes with 10% more professionals and the return of Spanish collectors, both private and corporate, as well as institutional, for a total of 27,280 collectors as a consequence of the growing confidence in the Spanish art market.

In total, 218 galleries from 29 countries took part, with 160 galleries in the General Program and 62 as part of special exhibits of curated painting, sculpture, installations, photography, video, new media, drawing and printmaking.

The growing participation by galleries from Latin America should be noted, which is up 52% to a total of 47 galleries from 10 countries.

The platform FUNDACIÓN ARCO selected the work of Carlos Bunga for their collection.

At this year’s event, the VIP area was a greenhouse space with flowers and greenery created by ZARA HOME. Inside were different areas with sponsors like Illy coffee, Solan de Cabras, official water of ARCO, Heineken, Ron Barceló Imperial and Ruinart next to the Audemars Piguet space.

The art fair included a gastronomic space, configured as a square with stalls containing up to date products, designed to encourage informal meetings with collectors, professionals and visitors to the fair.

A key date in the agenda for the art market in Spain as well as an art exchange between Europe and Latin America. The fair was attended by some 100,000 visitors.
